I loved the setting, but the bland characters weren't fun.

    Blurb:
Newly divorced on the eve of her thirtieth birthday, Brynn is sick of heartbreak. She thought she had found her happy ending, but now she’s living with a roommate, Josh, to afford her mortgage, and she’s trying to adjust to her new single life. At least she’s got Carson’s Cove to binge, her beloved 2000s teenage soap. The show ended unexpectantly on a cliffhanger after five seasons, and the two main characters, Sloan and Spencer, never got to declare their love for each other. The show is still perfect in Brynn’s eyes; despite all the drama that goes down, things always have a way of working out in Carson’s Cove . . . unlike her own life.
So when a birthday cake surprisingly shows up on her and Josh’s doorstep, Brynn makes a wish for the one thing she’s always wanted (but has failed to achieve herself): a happily-ever-after.
    My opinion:
The first book by Kate Robb had a great idea, but got lost after the half of the story. I didn't like the main character's development and found Gemma's whining quite tiring. But I wanted to give the author another chance because I already thought her ideas were great, and Prime Time sounded really good. The beginning was absolutly great. I loved the setting und found it intresting, that Brynn and Josh were not really friends, just roomates with the potential for more, because the chemistry between them was good and noticeable. I was really hoping I would like this book more because I liked the characters and the first few chapters were also good. The setting was very intresting and mysterious.
Who was behind all these incidents, and why did it all happen? While a wish was responsible, I sensed there must be more to it. So I puzzled along with Brynn and Josh and accompanied them as they tried to find their way around Carson Grove. However, it was pretty boring and over time became more and more like "This Spells Love." Not only did the storyline develop, but the characters also acted and thought very similarly, which bored and frustrated me more and more. It was as if I was facing Gemma and Dax again. That was a shame, in a way, because I really liked the actual characters in the first few chapters.
After a while, Josh and Brynn became increasingly pale and boring. I became less and less interested in what happened to them, especially since their love story read very emotionless. The chemistry I felt at the beginning had completely evaporated, and I wondered what they found in each other, since they barely had any time together in the parallel world to even begin to develop a romantic relationship. Brynn was more interested in playing her strange role from the soap than in developing herself. But Josh didn't get any room for that either. Instead, the usual clichés were played out, and towards the end, the love story spiraled out of control, making it no fun at all.
I skimmed the last few chapters because I wasn't interested in the other characters either. While the resolution to the whole mystery was quite good, and I liked the idea, it simply wasn't developed enough. It was missing a few pages and lacked good character development.
The writing style was easy to read and relatively fluid for most of the time, but after the good beginning, I wasn't really drawn in. It had too many long stretches, seemed unbalanced, and was often boring.
    Conclusion:
I liked the idea, the beginning, and the mystery. But my problem is that it read too much like "This Spells Love." While it was different in some ways and had some good moments, the characters acted and developed almost exactly like in the other book. At times, I could predict exactly how they would behave, and it just wasn't fun. I found Brynn quite tiring, and Josh was given so little space that they could have easily cut him out. The two had a nice chemistry, but it quickly disappeared and their love story unfortunately barely touched me. For me, this is the last book by Kate Robb, she's just not an author for me.
